The SDGs in Practice: How are we tracking?: Tāmaki Makaurau - February 2021

On 24 February 2021 Auckland held its first event for the year "The SDGs in Practice - How are we tracking?".

We heard from Dr Lesley Stone, Manager of Sustainability and Environment at the University of Auckland about the award winning work the University has been doing with the SDGs.

We also heard from Generation Zero's Dewy Sacayan, litigation lawyer by day and activist by night. After seeing the destruction of super typhoon Haiyan, Dewy has made it her mission to advocate for climate action. Dewy talked us through the importance of the SGDs, specifically SDG 13: Taking Climate Action.

Following the presentations, Barbara Nebel from Thinkstep ANZ ran us through an excellent workshop on the SDGs where each group looked at applying the SDGs in work, at university or in a personal capacity.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our speakers.

Actions:

  1. We are promoting our petition to NZ Parliament to adopt the SDGs properly, by appointing an independent commissioner of the SDGs, allocating the Goals to select committees and transitioning to a four year term. Show your support by signing the petition here.

  2. We mentioned Dr Girol Karacaoglu's new book, Love You: Public policy for intergenerational wellbeing, at our event. You can listen to an interview with Girol here or take one of our actions by purchasing his book to learn more.

  3. Ask your workplace about how they are contributing to the SDGs.
